Q&A with Jamie Peach

What was your first ever job?

First ever full time job was at Ladbrokes (the bookmakers), working in the call center.

How did you get into SEO?

After working my way up in the call center at Ladbrokes, I knew I wanted a job in the online space. I was already playing a role where I would package and communicate customer feedback from the call center about the online experience at Ladbrokes to relevant teams in that area and so was able to make a pretty smooth transition into a junior online product development role. From there I got interested in the technical stuff and how web experiences are built. Several web development courses later and I transitioned into a web designer role. A couple of years into that role and I became friendly with a guy who was the manager of this thing called SEO (no idea what it was at the time!) at Ladbrokes, since we shared a common interest in martial arts. He had just been given the green light to build out a team and wanted somebody with some technical experience who had been with this business a while - the rest is history and my first ever SEO manager is a good friend and mentor to this day!

What is your favourite SEO task to do?

I love troubleshooting, researching and digging into an issue and the data to solve business problems through SEO and find a path forward.

What inspired you to choose the topic of your chapter? Why is it important to you?

It isn’t something you come across every day and was both interesting and challenging to work on so I thought it might be of interest to others.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

Know what you stand for. What one tip would you give someone who would like to get into SEO as a career? Set aside time every day for SEO research, testing and learning.

What is your favourite SEO / marketing related resource or book? (other than Mastering In-House SEO of course!)

Search Engine Marketing, Inc. was the first ever SEO book I bought. Massively outdated now but will always have a soft spot in my heart!

How do you relax when you aren’t working?

I have a newborn baby so right now, if I’m not relaxing with her then I’m sleeping any chance I get!
